There are several differant materals that can be used for retaining walls. The best are ones that will allow water to pass tru with out building up pressure behind the wall. this one below is a keystone wall.

This is what it looks like now before it had no drainage and was causing water to run into the back door of the house. Parts of the old wall was falling down. Kids could not play in the back yard.

After removing the old wall, getting all the under brush out and installing a new drain system with slate as a base for drainage.

Here we are putting in the drains and installing the new wall.

Here is the wall after being torn out and then rebuilt with stone. The drain is behind the wall and under the slate. The grass was removed and slate was used to reduce the work to keep the area looking good. The wall was built a little taller than the old one to keep water and soil from washing over into the patio area.
